WEEK 12:
NUTRITION CHALLENGE:
**Find a local meat source!**
Explanation:
There are soooooo many issues with this country’s slaughterhouse industry. It’s disgusting. It’s appalling. It’s enough to have gotten Dave and I to swear off buying meat from unknown sources for good! (Meijer, Kroger, Tyson, fast food….we’re looking at you.) Aside from the inexcusable conditions and treatment of these animals which we rely on to sustain our bodies, the additional problem of QUALITY is a concern. So much of the meat in our market is laden with filth, drugs, antibiotics, steroids, filler, toxins… I wouldn’t put that sheeze in my body even if I DID agree with how the industry was treating these animals.
So what can we do about it? Get educated!! Support small farms! Support local families! Support those who treat our meat animals with the care and concern they deserve. If nothing else, at least KNOW where YOUR meat comes from. Ask your butcher counter what farm supplies their inventory. If they don't even know - um, red flag.
Happy chickens make happy eggs! And happy cows make happy burgers. Happy eggs and happy burgers make happy, healthy bodies.
Even if you don’t end up using a local meat farm, the information you gather this week will expand your mind to what really goes on with your food before it gets to your mouth and into your body. And the research you do will also help you plan your eating and help budget how to feed your family. Part of this week’s challenge will include a little self-discovery and planning as well as address the points above. Look at your habits and receipts even. Determine how much meat your family eats, how much you might normally spend on meat in the store in a week or month, how much a quarter cow or half a pig would cost from a local farmer, etc. See if it’s an option for you! You might be surprised, after a little initial set-up cost (a chest freezer maybe?), it could be the same, if not cheaper to eat this way than weekly trips to Whole Foods! And even if it comes out to be the same or slightly more, what kind of industry and people would you rather support (by giving your money to) when it comes to your protein sources……?
FITNESS CHALLENGE:
**Keep on keepin on.**
Explanation:
There is no change in the fitness part of the Challenge for the last couple weeks! Woohoo! At this point, we want you to go back through and complete any challenges you may have missed or perhaps want to revisit. If and when you do that, continue on with 3 sessions of cardio per week and go through some sort of strength-training at least 2x a week as well. Keeping a routine like this is a real solid start to getting to a sustainable life of fitness and health. Let us know how you’re doing!!!
